Situated in the north of Thailand, the city of Chiang Mai draws a lot of tourists and expats from around the world. Although the place is heavily populated by locals and people of all lands, it doesn’t have much of a reputation for naughty fun. On the one hand this is understandable. It draws a lot of hippie backpacker types and the locals mostly keep to the grindstone. But there are actually a lot of adult venues in the city even if people don’t know about them. There are also things like love hotels around for people who want to sneak away and have some fun. They have private entrances because a decent amount of their customers are cheating on their significant others or meeting with people they don’t want others to know about.

Most of the adult entertainment in the city is oriented to locals. On top of that there is the Loi Kroh strip which has a lot of bars and massage parlors. These bars and massage parlors pretty strictly hire regular ladies but there are a few places with ladyboys. I have already reviewed the two ladyboy bars on the street. They are Friend’s Corner and Marina Bar. These places have ladyboys working and most of them are up for going with customers

Late at night there are always ladyboy streetwalkers hanging around Loi Kroh too. They start to come out at about midnight near the Seven Eleven. As time goes on, more and more appear. After all the other bars close there is usually a group of ladyboy streetwalkers hanging around near the little police station. Normally they want 500 to 1000 Baht ($14 to $28 USD) to go anywhere with a guy. They are generally cheerful with good attitudes, but some people warn about them. There are reports of customers running into problems like theft and at least one guy reports that a few of them are HIV positive. I have no way to know if any of that is true. In any event, I am just reporting on the scene for the entertainment of readers and don’t recommend anything. I can say that a few of them are quite manly looking and some are really rough in appearance. One or two look ladylike and nice however.

Ladyboy streetwalkers usually appear even earlier around the moat of the old city. Most commonly they hang out on the east side of Kotchasarn Road. They sit on motorbikes in the side alleys waiting for guys to pass buy in cars or on motorbikes. Most of their customers are locals. They will also talk to foreigners and people who approach on foot. There are usually one to three there every night starting at about 7:00 PM and finishing around midnight. Some of them are quite good looking and would fit in any top Pattaya bar. You have to wonder why they work the streets. There are rumors, but I take those with a grain of salt. They ask for the same kind of money as other ladyboy streetwalkers in the city.

There is a decent cabaret show each night from Monday through Saturday at the Ram Bar. It stars ladyboys and crossdressers. It’s good if you are in to that kind of thing. The ladyboys will usually talk to guests but the don’t normally go away with people. I guess it might be possible for someone to make a connection there. The show reminds me of the shows at Rainbow Bar in Phnom Penh.

Finally, there are ladyboys found in normal life. They have to be dated or at least chatted up before they go anywhere with guys. There aren’t as many ladyboys in Chiang Mai as you see in Bangkok, but there are certainly a few around. I’ve spotted some working in places like the Kad Suan Kaew and Central Festival shopping malls. They were all friendly and easy to talk approach and talk to.

Most ladyboys are also using apps and ladyboy dating sites. Some of the ladies on these ladyboy dating sites are freelancers or even professionals looking for money, but more are regular ladyboys looking for fun or love. The first time I ever opened the Tinder app in Chiang Mai I found a lot of ladyboys. Most of them matched with me and a few university students offered to meet up for free sex with no strings attached. Like a sore dick, that’s hard to beat.

It’s no secret that Thailand is home to one of the largest ladyboy scenes in the world. In fact, it could even be described as the ladyboy capital of the world. Even when you go to other countries like Singapore you find a lot of ladyboys from Thailand and few, if any, locals. The northern city of Chiang Mai draws millions of visitors every year. But unlike Pattaya and Bangkok, the city has a limited adult entertainment scene. Most of what does exist is focused on locals. Only a few places really aim at bringing in farang.

The main action for foreigners is the strip of bars and massage parlors along Loi Kroh Road. That road only contains two ladyboy bars. I have already reviewed Friend’s Corner. The other bar is a little less obvious if you are just passing by.

Marina bar isn’t exactly hidden. It’s just not the kind of place you would spot on a quick walk or drive through the area. The bar is nestled in the corner of an entertainment complex on Loi Kroh that contains a large boxing ring. Muay Thai kickboxing matches are held their pretty regularly. If you’re there watching a fight you almost couldn’t miss the bar. The bar itself is pretty small, but it has a large seating area outside. There are some bench seats along with some picnic tables. I guess they make most of their money when the fights are going on. People who don’t want to sit in the audience right in front of the ring can instead sit at one of the picnic tables in front of Marina bar and enjoy a cold drink while the fight goes down. The bar has a huge drink menu that contains most mixed drinks ever imagined.

When fights are not happening there doesn’t seem to be much draw to Marina bar. Since I’m not a fan of watching people beat each other up, that it means it doesn’t haven’t much draw for me at all. It is not that the place is necessarily bad, there just isn’t much going on.

Besides a male bar tender, the bar is very lightly staffed. The last time I visited there were only two women working. One was a rather masculine looking ladyboy in regular street clothes who looked more like a waitress than a ladyboy bar worker. The other was a very exotic looking dark skinned ladyboy in a pantsuit. They were both nice enough once I went over and talked to them, but they are hardly the type that one might expect in a place like this.

I get the feeling that I could have hung around for hours without either of the ladyboys even talking to me if I wouldn’t have made the first move. That’s how laid back the place is. Sure, at least one of them would have come to take my order, but that would have been it. In talking with the ladies I realized that they both have boyfriends and purposely chose to work in Marina instead of Friend’s Corner. Apparently Friend’s Corner has a high level of competition. That makes sense since it’s the only other ladyboy bar around. It’s also packed with ladyboys considering the size.

So the ladyboys at Marina are more about hanging out and maybe making some small talk to practice their English than anything else. They don’t wear sexy clothes or come on to or even really approach customers. Their is little to no playfulness in the bar at all and if the place has a bar fine system they don’t make it known.

It’s not a bad place to relax and have a drink, but it’s surely no major draw either. The place distinctly lacks excitement. I guess for some that would be a point of attraction.

Thailand is home to countless ladyboys. It’s known around the world as the home of the famous kathoey. Ladyboys can be found all over the country with most living normal lives and working mainstream jobs. More than a few go another route and get into the naughty nightlife business.

Some cities like Bangkok and Pattaya are filled with ladyboy bars. Other cities don’t have many of these places even though they are visited by thousands of tourists. Chiang Mai is one such city. Lots of people from around the world go there but the ladyboy venues are extremely limited. Outside of a cabaret show near the night bazaar boxing ring there is only one dedicated ladyboy bar.

Friend’s Corner is a ladyboy focused beer bar on Loi Kroh road. This road is filled with beer bars that make up basically the totality of the girlie bars for foreigners in the city. There are two genetic lady go go bars in town too but both are just a minute by foot from Loi Kroh.

The bar would be easy to miss as it has a small sign and is nestled among a lot of other bars and massage parlors but there are almost always some ladyboys sitting out front who are a lot more obvious. Like the cisgendered ladies on the strip they call out to guys who pass by in an attempt to get them inside of the bar.

Friend’s Corner is apparently owned by a Japanese guy though he doesn’t make many appearances. Or if he does I have missed them all. It’s a bar of normal size with an open front. Inside there are some seats, a bar to the right and a pool table in the back. The pool table is sometimes used by people who otherwise seem to have no interest in ladyboys. Go figure.

Since the poll table like the drink prices are just average for the area the ladyboys should be the main draw and for most people they probably are. It would be hard to tell for sure though since the place never seems to get all too busy. In low season especially it can go without customers for hours on end. That’s just the way things are in Chiang Mai.

There are ten to twelve ladyboys working at Friend’s Corner most nights. Variation can depend on the ladyboys. Sometimes they take days off, go on trips or get barfined for a number of days. Most of the ladyboys are good looking. They tend to be tall and attractive with big fake breasts that are very well done. Of course there are a few exceptions. Just as there are one or two absolutely stunning ladyboys there who could pass for regular women most nights there are also one or two rougher and more manly ladyboys with broad shoulders and probably even some stubble on their chins. Both sets get their share of customers and you might be surprised to know which set gets more. I guess it all depends on your outlook. Some guys want chicks with dicks. Others want guys with tits.

The ladyboys who work at Friend’s Corner are not pushy at all. If a customer doesn’t invite one over to sit with them they might not come at all. They usually don’t ask for drinks either. It’s up to the customer to ask them to drink. That’s a lot different than most ladyboy bars where the staff pushes hard for ladydrinks in order to get some commission.

Even the occasionally rude lesbian bartender is pretty easy going when it comes to drinks. She doesn’t push customers to buy drinks even though she sometimes asks for one herself in a halfway joking manner.

Barfines are reasonable at 500 Baht ($14 USD) and there is even a room available on top of the bar for use. Customers may prefer to go there through the stairs in the back rather than walking through the well lit and busy streets surrounding the bar if they are shy about being with a ladyboy. In Thailand most people don’t care much either way but a lot of the foreign visitors can’t control themselves and love to gawk.

Customers are expected to pay any ladyboys they take out of the bar for their time. The going rate is around 1000 Baht ($29 USD) though it can go up or down depending on the situation and the negotiations that take place. I am simply reporting the average fee paid.

At the time of writing all of the ladyboys at Friend’s Corner bar are pre-op with fully functioning tools. Since they work for money they all at least try to be versatile even if they have their own preferences.
