I wrote about ladyboy locations in Phnom Penh a few months ago. That post basically summed up the city when it comes to finding ladyboys. Of course things change and continue to develop. That’s really true in Phnom Penh where an ancient society and people clashes with a modern way of life that continues to usher in new changes.

There have long been ladyboys in Cambodia. In fact the Thai word kathoey used to describe ladyboys comes from the Khmer word for ladyboys which is also kathoey. At the same time ladyboys have been hidden in recent years than they are in Thailand. That’s probably a reflection of the views of the populace that are not necessarily accepting of ladyboys even though they aren’t usually outright virolent homophobes and transophobes of the like seen back in the land of the free.

Anyway, things are starting to change. Ladyboys are popping up all over Phnom Penh, and not just in the traditional spots. Lately I have been seeing more ladyboys than ever and I have been seeing them in a range of new places or at least places that are new to me.

There are more ladyboys in the bars than ever too. There still aren’t any ladyboy bars in Phnom Penh and for all I know there might never be. Instead the ladyboys mix in with the regular women in a lot of the bars. That has always happened to some extent in Phnom Penh, but until recently it was relatively rare. It is now nothing to see two or more ladyboys in any number of bars on any given day of the week.

Some bars are still ladyboy free, but others have ladyboys pretty regularly. The bars where ladyboys show up the most seem to be located on Street 136 near the riverside. Bars that most often have ladyboys include Candy Bar, Butterfly Bar and the Phnom Penh Hilton. Ladyboys are also commonly found inside Island Bar on Street 118. That bar is notable in that basically everyone on staff will go out with customers on barfines. That is not always true in the hostess bars of Phnom Penh.

But bars aren’t all that new, especially to the kind of people that read a website like this. So let me tell you about some of the newer places I have been seeing ladyboys, including some of the most beautiful ladyboys I have ever seen anywhere in the world!

The first place is the riverside promonade. That long walk has been greatly improved over the years and indeed it seems to be undergoing another improvement as we speak. Anyway there are now ladyboys out on this walk every single night. They start showing up around dark which in Phnom Penh comes at a reliable 6:30 PM every day of the year.

There has long been talk of freelance prostitutes on the riverside but in my experience it has been greatly exaggerated. There simply aren’t that many prostitues mixed win with the hundreds of regular people that walk there every night. Or at least there weren’t. Like I said, there are now ladyboy freelancers there all the time.

Now these aren’t the most beautiful ladyboys by a longshot. Of course some guy might think they’re super hot but they fall on the more masculine side and some look like little more than men with wigs on. In that they’re very similar to the ladyboys who used to hang out on the bridge near Democracy Park every night. Some locals notice this and joke about it out loud too.

I guess these ladyboys get customers though. If they didn’t, why would they be out on the riverside every night? From what I see they mainly focus on middle aged to old white guys they find on the promonade, and they’re not all that shy about approaching either.

Another set of younger much more attractive ladyboys can be found at the Wat Botum Park nearly every night. Years ago the park at Wat Bottoum had a bad reputation as a place for criminals and drug users. It has been seriously cleaned up. It’s now a nice open place for walking and lots of locals converge every night for dancing, playing sports and just hanging out. There are usually some hanging out near the Vietnamese Frienship Monument every night playing guitar, riding skateboards annd smoking weed.

Apparently Wat Bottoum Park now has a reputation for some as a place where gays hang out. Now, I see a lot of families and kids there but the presence of gays and ladyboys can’t be denied. They especially hang out at the end of the park where it borders on Preah Suramit and Soathearos Boulevards. The gay guys seem to get a kick out of the dancing but the ladyboys usually eat on the plastic chairs or sit over on the stone benches.

I have seen probably 20 ladyboys there on the best nights and to be honest they were some of the hottest I have seen anywhere in the world. I mean really. One time I was with a woman and I was totally tempted to just blow her off and leave her behind when one of the most attractive ladyboys I have ever set eyes on was hinting at me to come join her.

The ladyboys at Wat Bottoum Park look to be in their early twenties. Unlike many Khmers they have white skin. They’re also tall, beautiful and ladylike with big boobs and long hair. Like many of the younger generation they can speak English very well and they’re happy and a lot of fun.

I get the distinct idea that the ladyboys there are looking for dating and love, or at least fun, rather than money. Sure some of them might be involved in the pay for play game, but even if that is true they are not looking for customers while at Wat Bottoum. They are just there having a good time, eating, and hanging out with their friends. Besides, some of them look like they already have a bit of cash judging by their new Scoopy and Zoomer motorbikes and IPhone Xs.

In order to talk to the ladyboys at Wat Bottoum Park you actually have to approach them. Approaching regular chicks is tough for some guys, so I imagine approaching ladyboys in a public place that isn’t a bar would be even tougher for a lot of men. The truth is that they’re friendly and open but I understand the anxiety.

The easiest way to meet ladyboys continues to be online. Every self respecting ladyboy in Cambodia has a smart phone and most of them are using dating apps too. Tinder and Badoo continue to be the most popular dating apps in Phnom Penh but if you’re looking for ladyboys you have to swipe through a lot of regular chicks. While they aren’t as popular as Tinder and Badoo, Lady Boy Kisses and TS Dates can actually be better for finding ladyboys because they focus specifically on kathoeys rather than mixnig them in with the genetic girls like some of the bars do.

There’s no question that Thailand leads the world in ladyboys. It has the highest number of ladyboys, the highest percentage of ladyboys and many would say the best looking ladyboys. Thai ladyboys can be found in all parts of life. You see them online and in the bars but you also find them in the streets, in the malls and working in all of the stores. It’s tough to go a day without seeing at least one ladyboy. Usually you see a lot more. Many of people don’t think about Cambodia when it comes to ladyboys but there are many in the country. In fact the Thai word kathoey used to describe ladyboys is actually borrowed from Cambodia!

Nowadays Cambodia is a little more conservative in terms of sex. You can find ladyboys in Phnom Penh but you don’t see them all over the place. There are a few bars and streets where ladyboy sex workers usually hang out but that’s all hit and miss. And it’s of no interest for people looking for genuine romance with a ladyboy either. In many ways the internet is the best place of all to find ladyboys in Phnom Penh.

There are many dating sites in the world. I couldn’t even begin to count all the sites I have used over the years. Most of the sites I was using ten or fifteen years ago aren’t even around anymore. Some of the newer sites probably won’t be around in the future. With more people using phones than computers, especially in Cambodia, apps are really popular. Some dating sites have their own apps and some apps are stand alone. Through a lot of trial and error I think I have discovered the best dating sites and apps for meeting ladyboys in Cambodia.

Badoo is a weird platform. It is some kind of mix between a game, a social network and a dating site. I have never even heard of it in the United States but for some reason it is pretty popular in Southeast Asia. That’s especially true in Cambodia. Years ago it was the most popular dating site in the country. Today it is still pretty popular. It also has an app that connects with the site and works in the same way. You can search for ladies in Phnom Penh. That will turn up a mix of ladies and ladyboys. There are way more ladyboys on the site in relation to regular ladies then you will ever see on the streets of the city. Badoo is free to use but they ask for upgrades and stuff. I’ve never really needed that. The one time I used it it didn’t seem to help.

Another free site called Date in Asia is still used by some ladies and ladyboys in Cambodia, but it is clearly losing popularity. There aren’t many ladyboys on the site anyway but since there are not many Cambodians on the site at all they can be easier to find. Plus no money is involved so there isn’t much to lose.

Ladyboy Kisses charges money but in my view it is worth it. The site is catered specifically to ladyboys and the guys who love them, or at least want to get their hands on them, and the word is out throughout Southeast Asia. A lot of Khmer ladyboys can be found on the site with ease and there is no need to sort through lots of regular ladies to find them. There is a good mix on the site between ladyboys looking for fun and ladyboys looking for love.

Another similar site is My Ladyboy Date. It has a lot of ladyboys from Phnom Penh too, though they are all looking for love. Those are the rules at that site anyway. It’s not about the naughty!

Another site that works best when money is spent is TS Dates. This site is clearly more adult oriented and the Cambodian ladyboys found on the site know that. For people who don’t want to deal with a lot of back and forth the site works pretty well. It is focused and everyone involved knows exactly what is going on. Of course ladyboys are more open for fun than most regular ladies which is one of the reasons so many of us love them!

Finally, there is the old smartphone standby Tinder. A lot of foreigners use it in Phnom Penh but lately there are more and more locals. Ladies and gay guys are the most common but there are a lot of ladyboys on there too. You can certainly come across more ladyboys in a few minutes of swiping than you would in a whole day of beating the streets.

The country of Cambodia has a shady reputation after emerging from years of war to rebuild. The only things most people know about it are the long war, Angkor Wat and the unsavory reputation as a magnet for sickos. I haven’t tried to dig too deep into the underbelly of the place, but as far as I can tell the bad reputation the place has is either exaggerated or outdated. There are a lot of working women around but a lot of them are on the older side. That’s relative. Women in their 30’s are older in a country where people die on average in their 50’s.

Most sex work in Cambodia is aimed at locals. It spans from five dollar brothels for poor guys to high end karaoke places for connected guys who want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars. Most foreigners don’t see any of this, or pass by it all without noticing. For foreigners the main realm is the girlie bars in Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap.

There are a good number of ladyboys in Cambodia but it’s nothing like Thailand where they are a normal part of everyday life. That’s true even though kathoey, the very word for ladyboy in Thai, originates in Cambodia and the local Khmer language. In Thailand this word is sometimes used to described gay guys. In Cambodia it is too, but it is just as common for gay guys to be called “gay.” The English word and concept seems to have filtered into the language. Cambodian ladyboys usually don’t look as good as the ladyboys in Thailand. I think that’s because they are in general poorer and less accepted. It’s not common to see a ladyboy with silicone tits or any other surgery. A lot of times they don’t even have good clothes. They live more in the shadows too. You don’t see many walking out and about.

There are dozens of girlie bars in Phnom Penh but none are ladyboy bars. The closest thing to that would be the Rainbow Bar near the corner of Street 136 and Norodom Boulevard. In reality, this is a gay bar where local guys entertain a mostly foreign customer base. But on certain days they have cabaret shows where some of the bar guys dress up in fantastical women’s clothes and do a little turn on the catwalk. A lot of these guys are looking for foreigners with money, but they aren’t really ladyboys. Rainbow Bar was attacked with a bomb years ago but it recovered and since then I haven’t heard of any anti-gay stuff. There are some really open gay places in town that don’t have any issues such as Blue Chilli on Street 178. Ladyboys occasionally appear there but it’s more of a place for gays and occasionally cross dressers.

Some ladyboy freelancers hang out at the infamous Golden Sorya Mall, which is a sort of open air beer garden. There aren’t many though. You might see three on any given night. They sometimes filter in and out of the local girlie bars like Plan B, but they don’t work in them. These ladyboys are usually pretty worn down. They will go with customers for as little as $15 US, but usually they want $20 or more.

Other ladyboys hang around Wat Phnom at night. They can also be found on the little bridge just two blocks south of Wat Phnom on Norodom Boulevard. These are street walkers who mainly aim at local guys. They are totally open to meet with foreigners though and most of them speak English pretty well which can’t be said for the “real women” who also work the same streets. They go with locals for as little as $5 but some will want more especially when it comes to foreigners who may make more in a day than their parents make in a month or even a year. Once in a while you’ll see a ladyboy walking the riverside at night looking for customers but they tend to look really rough.

A few of the hostess bars have ladyboys working regularly even though they are greatly outnumbered by regular ladies. This is a pretty new occurrence. It didn’t happen even a few years ago. But now you can usually find some ladyboys working at Island Bar on Street 118 and Candy Bar on Street 136. The ladyboys at Island Bar are generally passable and hot and ready to go with any cashed up guy who asks them.

Finally, there are two well known and quite attractive ladyboys who work the girlie bars on Street 104 near Wat Phnom. They can be found in Rose Bar and Top Ten Bar. They mix in with the regular women who work in these bars but they stand out as they are taller and have enormous fake boobs. I think they used to work in Thailand. You can find a lot of Cambodian ladyboys working the bars in Thailand where they are more accepted, able to get surgery and able to make a lot more money. Some of them then come home later. These ladyboys want $100 a night to go with a guy. Since Phnom Penh is such a small town word gets out and any guy who goes with them will be known at least on the street and around their hotel or home as a ladyboy lover. At most that usually means nothing more than a few jokes cracked in the background but it is something to mention.

So, the ladyboy scene is pretty limited in Phnom Penh. Especially if you are only looking at the pay for play avenues. A lot of ladyboys feature prominently on dating websites and apps though. You will always see a good amount of ladyboys on Tinder, Badoo, Tango and Date in Asia. The ladyboy focused dating sites like Ladyboy Kisses and My Ladyboy Date also have many, and weed out any genetic women. Some of these ladyboys are looking for money and nothing more, but a few are really looking for love.
